Dark Winter Wedding with Two Grooms at Chelsea Register Office

This winter I’ve photographed quite a few dark winter weddings. By that I mean, weddings that have been scheduled to start late in the afternoon or even early evening in winter, after the sun has set. This has some major implications on the kind of photography you can expect from your wedding photography, especially if you are hoping to have some nice relaxed outdoor wedding portraits.

The fact is, photography is the capture of light, and so it follows that you need some light to capture. Or bring your own light, i.e. flash. But using flash on portraits by definition makes them look less “natural” than daylight portraits, and if you’re outside in the dark, there is no wall or ceiling to bounce the flash off to make it look more natural or diffused. So if you’re having a dark winter wedding, you have two choices when it comes to your portraits: Stay indoors and use flash for more staged, less dynamic portraits, or do what these two grooms, Gerry and Oscar did, which is to meet BEFORE the wedding ceremony and do your couples portraits whilst there is still a little bit of light left to work with.

So this blog post start with our grooms’ wedding portraits as we shot them before their Chelsea Register Office wedding ceremony. When we got back to the register office, all the guests, a super international bunch, were waiting for us, ready for the Brydon Room wedding. It was a joyous ceremony, at my favourite register office, and I was delighted to be a part of it.

As predicted, by the time we came outside for the confetti through and big group photo, it was pitch black outside, with the camera barely able to recognise the subjects, in the complete absence in any daylight falling on their faces. From Chelsea Register Office we made our way to the luxurious Goring Hotel for the wedding reception. The grooms changed into a super stylish set of velvet tuxedos for the evening meal, with the most fabulous men’s shoes I’ve seen in some time! Louboutin, of course!

Many congratulations to Oscar and Gerry, and best wishes for a long and happy life together.
